Chapter 847:
Instead, he rose to his feet and said in a hurried voice, “I’m going to take a shower.”
Without giving me another glance, he walked straight into the bathroom. A soft click echoed through the room as the door closed behind him.
I remained where I was, staring blankly at the shut door, completely bewildered.
He had always been the one grieving over the years he’d lost with the children and with me.
But now that I had finally gathered the courage to take the first step, he was the one backing away.
Ethan’s POV:
The moment I stepped into the bathroom, I turned the faucet all the way on, letting the roar of rushing water drown out my uneven breathing.

Freezing water cascaded over my overheated skin, sending a piercing chill through my entire body.
I braced both hands against the sink and lowered my head, allowing the icy stream to run over my face and neck, silently hoping it could cool the chaos raging inside me.
I’d never lied to Lianne. And I never wanted to.
But when she looked at me moments ago with eyes full of hope and told me she wanted another baby, I couldn’t bring myself to meet her gaze.
All I could offer was a hollow excuse.
Even saying those words had taken everything I had. I didn’t dare look into her eyes because I knew she would see through me in an instant.
Lianne had always been far too perceptive. There was no way she wouldn’t realize something was wrong.
If this had happened in the past, I would’ve been over the moon.
But now… No matter how desperately I wanted another child with her, I couldn’t agree.
I slowly lifted my head and looked into the mirror. Water dripped from my hair, tracing slow paths down my face.
The redness in my eyes and the tight set of my jaw gave away every ounce of composure I was desperately trying to hold together.
At least I’d gotten out of there in time. If Lianne had seen me like this, she would’ve known immediately that something was terribly wrong.
Just then, the phone resting beside the sink buzzed. The screen lit up with a message from Melisa.
“There were still a few issues with the previous antidote, so I’m going to reformulate it. Bring Lianne over tomorrow afternoon so I can examine her condition again and adjust the prescription. Same place as before.”
I stared at the message on the screen, my fingers tightening around the phone until my knuckles turned white.
How could the antidote suddenly have problems?
It was obvious this was Melisa’s way of reminding me just how indispensable she was.
I knew exactly what kind of person she was.
She possessed the antidote, and with it, she held Lianne’s life in the palm of her hand. She believed that as long as she controlled Lianne’s treatment, she could keep me on a leash, forcing me to give in to her demands time and time again.
