Chapter 849:
Those words shattered what little composure I had left.
I gently cupped her face, carefully brushing away the tears gathering at the corners of her eyes. My throat tightened, and when I spoke, my voice was so hoarse it barely sounded like my own.
“Lianne… do you know what I was like after we were separated? There were countless times when I wanted to end it all. The only thing that kept me going was the hope of finding you again. I wanted to protect you and stand beside you. Money has never meant anything to me. Neither has status or wealth. If spending every penny I own can buy your health and keep you safe, then it’ll be the best investment I’ve ever made.”
How could Lianne possibly be a burden?
She was the mate the Moon Goddess had chosen for me. She was my reason for surviving. The reason I had endured every painful day until now.
Her tears flowed even more freely.
I patiently comforted her, reminding her of everything she had brought into my life. She had given me two wonderful children. She had filled my empty world with warmth. She had given me a home worth protecting.
I reassured her that tomorrow was simply a routine examination, that there was nothing for her to worry about.

Only after a long while did she finally calm down. With tear-filled eyes, she gave me a nod.
I pulled her back into my arms, holding her as though I never intended to let go. Resting my chin lightly against her hair, I slowly closed my eyes.
I didn’t care about Melisa’s schemes or her threats.
The only thing that mattered to me was keeping Lianne safe. As long as she could stay by my side, healthy and alive, I wanted nothing more.
Lianne’s POV:
Knowing how much I hated hospitals, Ethan had gone out of his way to move all of Melisa’s medical equipment into one of his private estates.
As our car slowly wound its way up the hillside and rolled through the gates, an indescribable mix of emotions settled over me.
The more carefully Ethan tried to protect me, the more I felt like a delicate porcelain doll that might shatter if handled too roughly.
The moment we stepped inside, I spotted Melisa waiting in the living room. She was wearing a pale dress, her long hair cascading naturally over her shoulders. Without her white coat, the icy, detached doctor I had grown used to seeing was nowhere to be found. Instead, she looked gentle and graceful.
“You’re finally here,” she greeted us with a polite smile. Yet from the moment we entered until she finished speaking, her eyes never once left Ethan.
I might not have been the sharpest person in the room, but there was no way I could miss the meaning hidden behind that lingering gaze.
Silently, I curled my fingers into fists, though not a trace of emotion showed on my face.
