Chapter 857:
Ethan’s POV
Every moment I spent outside the emergency room felt like endless torture.
I stood against the wall with my eyes locked on the closed door. The sight of Lianne lying in a pool of blood kept flashing through my mind. Every time the thought returned, it felt like a dagger being driven into my chest.
I had no idea how much time had passed before the door finally swung open.
Melisa walked out, removing her mask, looking utterly exhausted. “She woke up for a short while, but lost consciousness again. Her condition is stable for now.”
The tension in my fists eased for a moment, then tightened again. “Why did it suddenly get this bad? You told me the toxins in her body had been brought under control.”
Melisa looked at me with weary eyes and said helplessly, “She’s been driving herself too hard these past few days and has completely worn herself out. Her immune system weakened, giving the toxins a chance to spread and trigger this attack. I warned you before that she needed proper rest and couldn’t keep pushing herself. Why didn’t you make sure she listened?”
My eyes turned bloodshot as I fixed a hard stare on her. My voice was low and chilling. “Cure her completely. Right now.”
Melisa’s answer was even firmer than I expected. She held my gaze and answered in a cold, unwavering tone. “That’s impossible. Ethan, you know this toxin has no complete cure. I can keep it under control, but I can’t eradicate it.”
Fear and rage crashed over me at once, destroying the last bit of reason I had left.
I rushed forward, wrapped my hand around her throat, and slammed her against the wall.
Her back struck the hard wall with a dull sound.
Arthur’s furious roar echoed inside my head. “Kill her! She dared to hurt our mate!”
Melisa’s face quickly turned red as she struggled to breathe. She gripped my wrist with both hands. “If you… kill me… she won’t live either…”

I stared at her, my fingers rigid around her neck, yet I couldn’t make myself squeeze any harder.
I couldn’t do it. I wasn’t willing to risk Lianne’s life.
I suddenly let go and stepped back.
Melisa bent over, coughing violently while holding her throat. When she looked up at me, her eyes were brimming with fear.
I took a slow breath and tried to regain my composure. Anger wouldn’t change anything. I needed a solution.
When I finally spoke, my voice was so calm it hardly sounded like mine. “Transfer the poison from her to me. Melisa, you’re a witch. I’m sure you can transfer it. Put every bit of the suffering on me and let her live free.”
Melisa stood there in stunned silence. Her eyes were filled with conflicting emotions as she stared at me. “Ethan, have you lost your mind? Do you understand what you’re asking? For the rest of your life, your fate will be in my hands.”
“I know.” I met her gaze without wavering, spelling out each word. “As long as she’s alive and safe, I don’t care if you hold my life in your hands forever.”
Melisa was quiet for a long while. At last, she dropped her eyes and spoke in a soft voice. “I’ll think about it.”
