Chapter 858:
It wasn’t an outright refusal. At that moment, it was the most hopeful answer I could ask for.
Some hours later, Lianne was moved into a regular hospital room.
When I stepped inside, I saw her sitting upright on the bed with an IV connected to her hand. Her face was drained of color.
The moment she saw me, she gave me a faint smile. Her voice was soft, carrying a trace of playful warmth. “Ethan, you’re here.”
The fear and anger I had kept buried for hours finally broke free.
I walked to her bedside and looked down at her with a stern expression. My voice came out cold and unforgiving. “Lianne, do you even realize how close you were to dying? Didn’t I tell you to rest? Wasn’t I clear enough? Why didn’t you listen to me?”
She blinked, then lightly tugged at my sleeve with an apologetic look. “I know I was wrong. There were just two days left. I thought I could hold on until then. I didn’t know it would get this serious…”
She was still smiling as she spoke, sounding as though it were nothing important. She had no idea that death had been only a single breath away, or how overwhelming the fear inside me had been as I watched it happen.
Seeing her pale face and forced smile, I felt as though my chest had been struck by something heavy.

“Lianne, I saw you collapse.” My voice was rough, shaking with emotion. “The blood was all over your body. At that moment, everything inside me went numb. My biggest fear was losing you forever.”
The smile slowly disappeared from her face. She looked at me with quiet resolve in her eyes. “Ethan, I don’t want to leave you either. I won’t go that easily.”
My heart ached deeply. I lowered my head, resting my forehead against the back of her hand, and stayed silent for a while.
“Let’s make a deal.” I finally lifted my head to meet her eyes. “You can continue working on your project. I won’t stop you anymore. But you have to accept my terms.”
She nodded immediately. “Go ahead. Whatever it is, I agree.”
“First, you can only work eight hours a day. Second, you’re not allowed to stay up late. Third, the moment you feel even a little uncomfortable, you have to tell me right away. No keeping it from me.”
I looked straight into her eyes, my voice steady and unwavering. “If you can’t keep those promises, I’ll put a stop to all your work and make you stay home until you’ve fully recovered.”
She was quiet for a brief moment, then a soft smile spread across her face. She looked at me warmly. “Okay. I promise. I’ll do as you say.”
As I looked into those trusting eyes, I made a silent vow. From this day forward, I would protect her with everything I had. I would never let her go through something like this again.
