Chapter 862:
Lianne’s POV
I had imagined Ethan’s reaction to my marriage proposal more times than I could count. I imagined him looking thrilled, leaning over me with a playful grin, then laughing and saying, “Yes.”
But I had never imagined he would stay silent.

The silence dragged on, far longer than it should have. Gradually, the excitement in my heart faded, replaced by a strange sense of unease.
I looked up at him and gently touched his arm. “Ethan? What’s wrong?”
It was as if he had only just returned to his senses. In a casual tone, he said, “Nothing. I just remembered there’s still some work I need to finish.”
He drew me into his arms and kissed my forehead. His voice was as gentle as ever, but I could clearly hear the avoidance beneath it. “Get some sleep. You have a meeting tomorrow morning.”
I knew he was intentionally steering the conversation in another direction.
This was the second time he had refused to answer me directly about restoring our mate bond.
A heavy feeling settled over my chest, making it hard to breathe. Even so, I didn’t want my frustration to get the better of me, and I certainly didn’t want us to argue because he had brushed off my question.
I gathered my courage and asked, “Ethan, don’t you want to restore our mate bond?”
He went still for a brief moment, then tightened his arms around me.
Resting his chin lightly on top of my head, he answered in a deep, firm tone, “Of course I want to. But I don’t want you to be the one to ask first. It would seem like I’m not sincere enough.”
I couldn’t help laughing. “That’s such an old-fashioned way of thinking! Does it really matter who brings it up first?”
He didn’t try to explain himself. He simply answered softly, “Yes.”
The knot in my heart instantly dissolved. Only then did I realize I had been worrying over nothing.
We had spent so much time together, and Ethan had always treated me with such gentleness that I had almost forgotten he was a proud Alpha.
Alphas were naturally possessive of their territory and fiercely protective of their mates. He wanted to take the initiative in something as important as restoring our mate bond, which was perfectly understandable.
As long as I was going to marry him in the end, I didn’t mind letting him take the lead.
I nodded and nestled deeper into his arms until I found a comfortable position. “Okay. I’ll wait for you to propose. Just don’t keep me waiting too long.”
In the dark, his voice sounded low and solemn. “In this lifetime, you’re the only woman I’ll ever marry.”
I smiled, and every lingering worry melted away.
I shut my eyes and urged eagerly, “Then hurry up and finish your work. I’ll be waiting for a proper proposal.”
