Chapter 863:
He didn’t answer. Instead, he tightened his arm around my waist and held me even closer.
Wrapped safely in his arms, with the steady rhythm of his heartbeat soothing me, I slowly drifted into sleep.
Ever since I brought up restoring our mate bond, Ethan had been coming home later and later. For several nights in a row, he didn’t return until well past midnight.
Whenever I asked, he always gave the same explanation: work was hectic, and the project was on a tight deadline.
Although I felt disappointed, I chose to believe him and never questioned him further.

But tonight, the moment he stepped through the door, I noticed something unusual.
A strong smell of disinfectant lingered on him.
I recognized the smell immediately. It wasn’t the smell of an office. It was the unmistakable scent of the Thorn Pack’s private hospital.
I slipped out of bed and walked toward him barefoot.
He stood by the entrance with his head lowered, changing his shoes. When he noticed me approaching, he paused for a moment, then quietly looked away.
“Ethan, were you really working late at the company tonight?” I asked calmly, leaving him no room to avoid the question.
His lips pressed into a thin line, but he said nothing.
“You went to the hospital, didn’t you?” I looked straight at him. “Then why did you tell me you were busy with the Voss Group project? Ethan, you lied to me.”
After a while of silence, he turned toward the bathroom. “I’m going to take a shower first.”
Without thinking, I reached out and caught his wrist. “Was it Rola? Did something happen to her? Is she in the hospital again?”
The next moment, his voice rose sharply. “I told you to stay out of this!”
He sounded impatient and frustrated. He had never been that cold to me.
I stood there in shock.
In all the years we had been together, he had never spoken to me like that.
My heart sank. I quickly softened my voice and tried to explain. “Ethan, please don’t get me wrong. I’ve already let go of the past. I’ve never wished anything bad to happen to Rola. I’m only worried about you…”
Before I could finish, he interrupted me. “I’m tired,” he said wearily. “I don’t want to argue.”
With that, he pulled his wrist free and walked into the bathroom.
I stood where I was, listening to the sound of running water behind the closed door. My heart was filled with uneasiness and bitterness.
I knew he was carrying the weight of both the Thorn Pack and the Voss Group. He was exhausted and under immense pressure. I didn’t dare throw a tantrum or continue to question him. The last thing I wanted was to become another burden to him.
So I returned to the bed and quietly waited for him. I planned to talk to him after his shower, hoping I could comfort him once he had calmed down.
