Chapter 864:
But when he came out, wearing fresh clothes, he didn’t even spare me a glance. In a detached tone, he said, “I’m not staying home tonight.”
I froze.
“W-where are you going?” My voice shook slightly.
“The hospital.”
Those were the only two words he said before turning toward the door.
My heart hurt, but I tried to be understanding. If someone important to me were lying seriously ill in a hospital, I probably wouldn’t have the strength to talk to anyone either.
I quickly climbed out of bed and hurried after him. “Wait. Let me get your coat. The hospital gets cold at night.”
I rushed back to grab it. But by the time I returned to the front door, Ethan had already left.
I stepped outside just in time to see the taillights of his car disappearing into the darkness. They grew smaller and smaller until they vanished around the corner.

The cold night wind swept over me, sending a chill through my body.
I stood alone at the doorway, still holding the coat I had meant to give him. Staring at the empty road, I felt as though a part of my heart had been carved away.
I immediately lost the desire to sleep.
Then I went back inside and curled up on the sofa. I wrapped my arms around my knees as I stared through the window at the dark night outside. My thoughts were in complete chaos.
Whenever Rola was involved, I always found myself trapped in the most difficult position.
I had chosen to let go of the past. But the history between us continued to drive an invisible distance between Ethan and me, making him colder and farther away each day.
I lowered my head and buried my face in my knees.
Ethan’s POV
Rola’s condition had taken a sudden turn for the worse, and she was rushed into the emergency room once again.
I remained at the hospital for two straight days, surviving on almost no sleep.
My phone screen kept flashing on and off as message after message from Lianne came in.
“Are you okay?”
“Have you eaten yet?”
“When are you coming home?”
I never answered a single one.
I had no idea what I could possibly say to her.
More than that, I didn’t know how I was supposed to face her. I was caught in an impossible situation, unable to bring myself to make the final choice. All I could do was let the passing hours wear me down.
In the middle of the night, the hospital corridor was silent enough to be unsettling. The harsh white fluorescent lights reflected across the polished tiles, bathing everything in a cold, lifeless glow.
I sat alone on the bench outside the emergency room. The chill had seeped into my bones, leaving my body cold and my fingertips numb.
Nurses hurried past with carts and medical equipment, yet not a single person spared me a glance.
Suddenly, the sound of frantic footsteps echoed down the hallway.
I lifted my head and saw Philip rushing toward me.
