Chapter 866:
But he couldn’t hear any of them. Still clutching the doctor’s sleeve with trembling hands, he begged as tears streamed down his face, “I’m begging you, please, save her, please…”
I stepped forward and firmly pulled Philip away from the doctor.
He struggled for only a brief moment before every bit of strength left him. His knees slammed against the floor. Then he crumpled where he was, muffled sobs of grief escaping him one after another.
I held his shaking shoulders, my own eyes burning with tears that refused to fall.
The truth was, I had prepared myself for this long ago. After watching Rola being rushed into the emergency room over and over again, I had known this day would eventually come.
But knowing it was inevitable didn’t make it any easier to bear. Now that it had finally happened, the helplessness and grief threatened to swallow me whole.
Death rendered all earthly status and riches completely useless.

All I could do was watch helplessly, without even getting the chance to say a proper goodbye.
The crushing bitterness spread through my chest until I could barely breathe.
I clenched my teeth so tightly that my jaw ached, forcing myself to keep the tears from falling.
Philip dropped to his knees on the icy tiles, his forehead pressed against the floor while tremors wracked his frame. His sobs echoed down the deserted corridor.
I shut my eyes and tilted my head back, letting the harsh white glare above sear through my lids. Within me, nothing lingered but a desolate expanse of remorse.
Rola had hurt a lot of people, but she never hurt me. Not once.
Yet she left me no opening to settle what I owed her.
Lianne’s POV
I had spent the entire night drifting in and out of sleep on the couch.
Calling it sleep wasn’t even accurate. It was more like lying there in a half-conscious state.
The living room lights had stayed on all night, and their harsh brightness seeped through my closed eyelids, making it impossible to get any real rest.
I kept listening for the sound of the front door opening, but it never came.
It wasn’t until I heard Ruby and Silas moving around upstairs that I finally startled awake.
Rubbing the stiffness from my neck, I got to my feet, packed their school bags, and saw them off to catch the school bus.
I remained standing at the doorway, watching the bus disappear into the distance as the cool morning breeze swept over me, sending a slight shiver through my body.
When I returned to the silent living room, I sat back down on the couch with my phone in hand, hesitating over whether I should call Ethan.
I was afraid of interrupting his rest, afraid he might be busy, and even more afraid he would answer in that distant, impatient voice.
I stared at his number on the screen for a long time, but my finger refused to press the call button.
Just then, my phone vibrated. Tim’s name flashed across the screen.
A strange feeling of dread settled over me as I answered.
