Chapter 869:
Everything I was doing now was meant to force her away. But I knew myself too well. The moment I looked into those warm, trusting eyes of hers, she would see straight through every lie I was trying to tell.
I had never been good at hiding my feelings from her. One look from her was enough to tear down every wall I’d built.
As the car headed toward Voss Group, I leaned back against the seat and closed my eyes. My voice came out low and rough. “Jeremy, I’ve decided. I’m going to use Rola’s death as an excuse to distance myself from Lianne.”
Jeremy’s grip on the steering wheel visibly tightened. After several moments of silence, he finally asked, “Have you really thought this through?”
I opened my eyes and stared at the city rushing past outside the window. “Only if I keep my distance and treat her coldly will Melisa truly believe Lianne is no longer my weakness.” My voice was so calm that even I barely recognized it. “Only then will she stop targeting Lianne.”

Watching Rola’s burial with my own eyes had left me with nothing but fear.
I refused to stand idle and watch Lianne suffer the same fate. Even if it meant driving her away and making her despise me, I would do it.
Jeremy fell silent for a long while before speaking again in a near whisper. “Why don’t you just tell her the truth? She’s reasonable. She’s not someone who refuses to listen.”
I slowly shook my head.
“You don’t know her,” I said hoarsely. “Lianne overthinks everything and carries every burden on her own shoulders. Deep down, she never feels worthy enough and hates becoming someone else’s burden. If she found out I was sacrificing myself for her, if she realized Melisa was using her to threaten me, she’d do everything she could to push me away instead.”
I hesitated, then let out a sigh. “If the choice is between her pushing me away entirely or losing her for good, I’d rather carry this weight alone and see this through by myself.”
Jeremy exhaled slowly, the fight draining out of him. He drove in silence for a long stretch before finally speaking. “Alright. I’ll help you. Just promise me you won’t burn yourself out.”
“And one more thing,” I added, fixing him with a serious look. “Tracy can’t know a word of this. She’s too reckless. If she slips, everything falls apart.”
Jeremy gave a quiet nod. “Got it.”
The car pulled up in front of Voss Group’s headquarters.
As I unbuckled and reached for the door, Jeremy’s voice stopped me. “Ethan.”
His gaze was tangled with concern and foreboding. “Once you step onto this road, there’s no turning back. Are you certain you can carry what’s coming?”
I pushed the door open, letting the biting wind cut through and steady my thoughts.
“Even if I can’t, I’ll find a way.” I stepped out and walked toward the building without looking over my shoulder.
I knew that from this moment forward, I would have to drive away the one person I cherished most so that she could finally live in peace.
