Chapter 872:
Ethan’s POV
I kept my eyes on Lianne’s retreating figure until the office door closed completely behind her. Only then did I let out a long breath and press my fingers firmly against my throbbing temples.
The exhaustion from days without sleep, combined with the constant strain I’d been carrying, pounded relentlessly inside my head, making it feel as though it would split apart at any moment.
I had forced myself to treat her with coldness, yet every cruel word that left my mouth carved a wound in my own heart.
Arthur’s furious voice roared endlessly inside my head. “Ethan, you’re hurting Lianne again! Haven’t you hurt her enough already? Go after her! Tell her you didn’t mean any of it! Tell her this isn’t her fault!”
For one brief moment, I nearly stood up. But reason stopped me.
I couldn’t.
For her future. For her safety. I had to endure this.
I slowly lowered myself back onto the sofa, shut my eyes, and forced myself to take several deep breaths before I barely managed to suppress the turmoil raging inside me.

A short while later, a knock sounded at the door.
“Come in.”
Noah walked in carrying a stack of documents.
His gaze briefly swept over my wrinkled shirt and the dark circles beneath my eyes, but he didn’t comment. Instead, he quietly placed the files on the desk. “Alpha,” he said, “these require your signature.”
“Leave them there,” I replied without looking up.
He had barely turned to leave when I called after him, “Noah.”
He stopped in his tracks and looked back.
Leaning against the sofa, I spoke in a detached voice. “From now on, no matter what Lianne asks you, don’t tell her anything about me.”
He paused for a brief moment before understanding dawned on him. “Understood,” he replied quietly.
I had to cut her off completely. The performance had to be convincing enough to deceive Melisa and secure Lianne’s safety for the future.
But the moment those words left my mouth, another wave of worry crashed over me. I added, “Go check on Lianne. If she doesn’t look well, let her leave work early and go home.”
Noah nodded once before walking out.
I stared blankly at the stack of documents covering my desk, unable to focus on a single page.
My thoughts were consumed by Lianne. Her reddened eyes. The silent way she swallowed her pain without uttering a single complaint.
The moment she had crouched beside the sofa and wrapped her hands around mine, I had almost lost control.
I even found myself regretting that I had never installed surveillance in her office. Not knowing how she was doing now, being left to imagine it over and over, was its own form of torture: slow, relentless, and unbearable.
Time crawled by. Every minute felt as endless as an eternity.
At last, another knock broke the silence.
Noah stepped inside again and lowered his voice. “Alpha, Lianne is crying.”
My heart seized so violently that I could barely breathe.
For an instant, every ounce of self-control nearly slipped away.
I shot to my feet, my body already moving toward the door before my mind could catch up. My instincts screamed louder than reason. They urged me to rush to her, to pull her into my arms, to brush away her tears and beg her forgiveness, to confess that this was all my fault.
But the moment my fingers grazed the door handle, I stopped cold.
I couldn’t afford to relent.
