Chapter 874:
The moment I answered, her tearful voice came through before I could even speak. “Lianne! Hurry to Thorn Hospital! Frank’s been hurt. He’s in critical condition!”
My heart dropped.
Frank had always been kind, cheerful, and warm toward everyone around him. Who could possibly have hurt him?
Without hesitation, I turned the car around, took Ruby and Silas to Tracy’s house, left them with her nanny, and rushed to the hospital together with Tracy and Jeremy.
The instant we reached the emergency room, I hadn’t even managed to catch my breath before someone charged straight toward me.
A sharp slap landed across my face.
The force snapped my head sideways. My ears rang violently, and a burning pain spread across my cheek.
Frank’s mother, Lucy Mill, stood in front of me, her eyes bloodshot, her entire body trembling with rage.
She glared at me, her voice hoarse as she shouted, “This is all because of you! Frank got hurt because of you! You gave him hope when there wasn’t any, and he was distracted when the rogues attacked him! How dare you come here!”
I stood frozen.

Frank had been attacked by rogues?
My mind went completely blank, and an overwhelming ache spread through my chest.
I’d already turned Frank down, clearly and definitively. I never gave him any false hope or led him on.
But I understood Lucy’s fear and desperation. If my own child were lying inside the emergency room, I might have lost all reason too. I couldn’t blame her. Even so, my chest felt unbearably tight.
Tracy immediately stepped in front of me, shielding me behind her as she faced Lucy. “This has nothing to do with Lianne!” she said firmly. “Frank getting hurt isn’t her fault!”
Jeremy moved in, pulling Lucy aside with a gentle hand and a quiet voice until her tension eased. Then he looked at Tracy. “Let me take Lianne back. You stay here and keep an eye on things.”
Jeremy turned to lead me out of the hospital. Before leaving, I looked back at the tightly closed doors of the emergency room. It felt as though an invisible weight were crushing my chest, leaving me unable to breathe.
During the drive home, I leaned wearily against the seat, completely drained.
My cheek still stung from the slap, but it was nothing compared to the pain weighing on my heart.
After a long silence, I spoke quietly. “Jeremy, please look after Ethan for me. He hasn’t been himself lately, and he doesn’t even want to see me. I don’t have the right to comfort him anymore.”
Jeremy fell silent for a moment before replying in an offhand tone, “Ethan’s been spending quite a bit of time with Melisa lately. She’s taking care of him now, so you don’t have to worry.”
The moment those words reached my ears, it felt as though an invisible hand had wrapped itself around my heart.
A sharp pain spread from my chest through my entire body, reaching all the way to my fingertips, until even drawing a breath became difficult.
