Chapter 875:
Seeing that I had gone quiet, Jeremy asked gently, “Doesn’t that bother you?”
I forced a faint smile onto my face. “No, not at all. I actually think it’s a good thing. As long as she’s looking after him, I can stop worrying.”
Even as those words left my mouth, my heart sank deeper into a bottomless darkness.
When the car stopped in front of the mansion, Jeremy stayed in the driver’s seat. He met my eyes through the rearview mirror, his expression filled with emotions too complicated to put into words.
He looked as though he wanted to say something, but after a brief pause, all he did was sigh. “I’ve already had someone bring the children home. They’re waiting for you inside. Get some rest, and don’t think too much.”
I nodded, opened the door, and stepped out into the cool evening.
The night breeze carried the crisp chill of early autumn, brushing against my face and sending a sharp sting across the tender skin where I’d been slapped.
I raised a hand to my cheek and took a slow, deep breath, trying to settle the turmoil inside me.

My emotions were tangled into an inescapable knot that left me feeling suffocated.
I took out my phone and called Tracy.
The call rang for quite a while before she finally answered. Her voice was thick with exhaustion. “Lianne, Frank’s still in surgery. There’s no update yet. I’ll call you as soon as I hear anything.”
“Alright,” I replied softly. “Take care of yourself too. Don’t push yourself too hard.”
After ending the call, I stood quietly at the front door for a few moments, composing myself before finally pushing it open.
The sound of children laughing instantly filled the house.
Ruby and Silas were on the carpet, stacking blocks into little towers. The moment Ruby spotted me, she abandoned her toys and dashed over, throwing her tiny arms around my leg. “Mommy! You’re home!”
Silas looked up from the floor and smiled at me as well.
The warmth of that simple scene slowly eased the tightness in my chest.
I knelt down, gathered Ruby into my arms, and kissed her softly on the cheek.
She let out a joyful giggle, then wound her little arms around my neck. “Mommy,” she asked in that sweet, innocent voice of hers, “where’s Daddy? When is he coming home? I really miss him.”
A faint pang tugged at my chest, but I smiled gently and stroked her hair. “Daddy’s been so busy with work lately. He’ll come home just as soon as he’s done.”
Ruby puffed out her cheeks.
After thinking for a moment, her eyes suddenly brightened. “Mommy, I want to call Daddy! Can I?”
I hesitated. Ethan had been so distant toward me that I worried another call would only upset him even more.
But when I looked into Ruby’s hopeful eyes, I couldn’t bring myself to refuse.
If I was honest with myself, a part of me wanted to hear his voice too. Anything to quiet the uneasiness growing inside my heart.
“Okay.” I fished out my phone and dialed Ethan’s number.
The rings stretched on for a long time before the call gave up and disconnected. He never answered.
