Chapter 880:
“I’ll move into the guest room,” she said hurriedly, her voice quivering despite her effort to stay composed. “Or I can stay at Tracy’s place for a few days. I’ll do whatever you want. Just don’t leave. Please don’t stay away from the children. I don’t want Ruby and Silas growing up without their father.”
Her last sentence pierced straight through me, cutting into the deepest, weakest part of my heart.
I slowly closed my eyes and drew in a long breath, trying to steady myself as the pain threatened to overwhelm me.
In the end, I couldn’t bring myself to cut off our ties completely.
I turned around and saw that Lianne’s eyes were slightly red and filled with tears. Her hand remained wrapped around my sleeve, as if she was terrified that the moment she released me, I would disappear.
My lips parted, and when I spoke, my voice was rough and filled with exhaustion. “I won’t leave tonight. Go to sleep.”
Staying behind that night had not been part of my plan.

I had only wanted to quietly see how Lianne and the children were doing before leaving again. But the exhaustion I had carried for days finally caught up with me. Before I realized it, I had collapsed onto the guest room bed and fallen into a heavy sleep.
Near dawn, I woke up briefly. My mind was still foggy when I felt a slight movement beside me. I knew it was Lianne. She stood near the doorway for a while, silently watching me. Then, with careful steps, she approached the bed and slowly lay down beside me. Her breathing was soft, and her familiar faint scent lingered in the air. She was like a little animal cautiously creeping close.
I didn’t open my eyes or make the slightest movement. A complicated feeling filled my heart, a mixture of warmth and pain. However, I forced myself to remain distant, even breathing as lightly as possible. I knew that if I allowed myself to soften even once, the plan I had made to protect her would become even more difficult to carry out. So I kept my eyes closed and listened as her breathing gradually became calm and steady. Only when the first rays of light seeped into the room did I finally let myself fall asleep again.
Several hours later, I woke up to the cheerful sounds of the children.
Ruby’s laughter drifted in from the hallway, mixed with Silas’s childish chatter and Lianne’s soft voice as she coaxed them.
I lay there for a while, quietly listening. For that brief moment, I allowed myself to enjoy the peace I had missed so much.
After getting up and washing up, I walked out of the guest room and saw the children already sitting at the dining table, having breakfast.
The moment Ruby noticed me, she immediately put down her spoon and stared at me with worried eyes. “Daddy, you’ve gotten so thin. Have you been eating properly?”
I knelt down and gently patted her head. “Of course I have, sweetheart. I’ve just been a little busy these past few days.”
