Chapter 886:
I kept telling myself that he must have his reasons. I had to trust him completely and wait patiently for him.
Half an hour later, the sound of the lock clicking open finally came from the door.
Ruby and Silas immediately sprang from the couch and rushed toward the entrance.
The door opened, and Ethan appeared in the foyer. Ruby ran straight to him and wrapped both arms around his leg, looking up at him sweetly. “Daddy! You’re finally home!”

Silas stood beside her, his face glowing with happiness.
Ethan froze for a brief moment, then bent down and lifted Ruby into his arms.
He looked exhausted, but the chill in his eyes faded noticeably the moment he saw the children.
The living room soon echoed with the children’s soft, cheerful laughter. That familiar home warmth eased the anxiety that had kept my heart on edge all night, finally allowing me to relax.
I walked over and took the suit jacket Ethan had removed, intending to put it away in the closet.
But the moment I lifted it, a familiar fragrance reached me.
It was the perfume Melisa always wore.
My hand stopped midair as countless thoughts rushed through my mind.
His account had gone offline hours ago, yet he had told me he was held up at work. It turned out he had spent all that time with Melisa.
Panic and bitterness suddenly surged through me. I drew in a deep breath and desperately tried to bury my suspicions, repeatedly reminding myself to stay calm. He must have gone to see her because of my condition, for the antidote. He had his reasons. I couldn’t allow myself to overthink it.
After hanging his jacket in the closet, I quietly returned to the living room, unwilling to disturb his time with the children.
Ethan sat on the couch with Ruby curled up in his arms. She chattered excitedly about everything that had happened at school that day. Silas rested against Ethan’s side, quietly listening.
Ethan lowered his gaze toward the two children and responded from time to time. His voice was much gentler than it had ever been when he spoke to me.
Watching them together left me with a complicated feeling of warmth and bitterness.
Once the children were finally exhausted, Ethan placed Ruby down, rose from the couch, and spoke in a calm but firm voice. “I’m sleeping in the guest room tonight.”
My heart sank instantly.
I knew exactly what he meant. He wanted us to sleep separately, deliberately putting more distance between us.
To me, separate rooms were never simply about sleeping apart. They were the first sign that a relationship was growing cold, a warning that two people were slowly drifting away from each other.
The stability I had fought so hard to build was slipping away right before my eyes.
There was a time when I was proud and carried myself with dignity, unwilling to lower myself for anyone.
