Chapter 889:
Lianne’s POV:
After that brief kiss, I was immersed in the warmth I had missed for so long. The lingering heat of Ethan’s lips stayed on mine. Then, suddenly, he pulled away.
He stood beside the bed with his back facing me. When he spoke, his voice was colder than ever. “Rola just died. I’m not in the mood for this.”
A wave of guilt crashed over me.
I had been too impatient. He was still mourning such a painful loss. How could I have acted like that? I lowered my head, quietly apologized, and turned toward the door, planning to return to the master bedroom.
The moment my hand touched the doorknob, his voice came from behind me. His next words shattered every bit of hope I had left. “Lianne, I don’t want to continue this anymore.”

I froze where I stood.
Slowly, I turned around, unable to believe what I had just heard.
He stood by the window with his back toward me. The moonlight poured into the room, outlining his tall, distant figure.
My lips trembled as I forced out the words. “What… did you say?”
Without looking back, he answered calmly, “I spoiled you too much before. I always gave in to you, and that’s what brought us here. The weight of two lost lives stands between us. Maybe you’ve let go of the past, but I can’t pretend none of it happened. I’m exhausted. I don’t want to keep going anymore. We’re over.”
Panic completely overwhelmed me.
I rushed to his side and grabbed his arm with trembling hands. “Ethan, what are you saying? We’ve been together for more than ten years. How can you give up on me so easily? We can leave the past behind. We can still have a happy life with our children. Please, Ethan…”
Lianne’s POV:
Ethan took a step back, breaking free from my grasp.
He looked at me, his expression so composed that it sent a shiver through me.
That calmness was neither anger nor sadness. It was an intense coldness, as if he had carefully locked away every emotion he had ever felt.
“Lianne, I’m serious,” Ethan said.
I bit down hard on my lip, forcing back the tears welling up in my eyes. I refused to believe this was really happening. I was convinced he didn’t genuinely want to end things with me. Something must have happened, some problem he couldn’t tell me about. He had to be saying these cruel words on purpose, trying to force me away.
He had loved me for years. So how could that love have disappeared all of a sudden?
He had told me he needed some time alone. It turned out he had been using that time to decide how to let me go.
