Chapter 895:
A sharp pain stabbed through my chest, and my throat tightened painfully. There had been a time when Ethan would interrupt even the most important meeting at a moment’s notice just because I needed him. Now, he even refused to see me.
I didn’t want to put Noah in a tough position, so I just smiled a little. “It’s all good. I’ll wait for him here.”
Noah opened his mouth as though he wanted to say something, but in the end, he only nodded before walking away.
I remained at the far end of the hallway, leaning against the wall as I tried to steady myself.

Every passing minute felt unbearably long. And suddenly, I understood. This must have been what he had felt all those years, the endless, hopeless ache of waiting for someone who might never turn back. It was truly excruciating and helpless.
Regret began to creep into my heart. I started wishing I hadn’t been so stubborn before, forcing myself to understand his struggles.
I didn’t know how long I had been waiting when the conference room doors finally opened.
Ethan walked out, followed by several senior executives. He looked even thinner than before. His suit hung loosely from his frame, and exhaustion weighed heavily across his features. Dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, making him look as though he hadn’t slept properly in ages.
“Ethan, I came to see you,” I said softly.
Without thinking, I lifted my hand, wanting to smooth away the tension gathered between his brows. But before my fingers could reach him, he shifted to the side, deliberately avoiding my touch.
The movement was cold. Distant.
My hand froze awkwardly in midair before I slowly withdrew it. The executives immediately sensed the uncomfortable atmosphere and tactfully excused themselves, leaving the two of us alone in the hallway.
Suppressing the embarrassment burning inside me, I spoke in a soft voice. “Ethan, I… I tried to enter the conference room just now, and I noticed the passcode had been changed.”
He looked down for a moment, his face staying neutral. “Yeah. The company system gets regular updates, so they reset the passcodes.”
I recognized the lie immediately. A routine system update wouldn’t have selectively revoked my access alone. Still, I chose not to call him out. Instead, I offered a soft smile and dropped my voice to a gentler register. “It’s fine. I was just surprised for a moment. I’m not blaming you.”
He said nothing.
I forced another smile, doing my best to keep my tone casual. “I just wanted to see you. You’ve been away from home for several days now, and the children have been asking about you constantly.”
When the children were brought up, his lashes gave the faintest flutter. Yet the brief reaction vanished in an instant, his face returning to its usual detachment. “Work has been hectic,” he said. “I can’t make it home lately.”
I paused, clutching the last shreds of my nerve, and finally voiced the question I could no longer bury. “Ethan… have you ever considered where we really are?”
I forced my lips into a smile, foolishly hoping it might coax some warmth from his frosty gaze.
