Chapter 899:
I collapsed deeper into the sofa, my head lolling back, eyes fixed on the ceiling’s ugly water stains. There was nothing going on inside me, just a vast, hollow emptiness.
Then my phone rang again. The persistent sound dragged me abruptly out of my thoughts.
I looked down. The name displayed on the screen made my heart sink. Melisa. I stared at it for a long moment. A mess of conflicting emotions churned inside me.
Eventually, I inhaled deeply and answered. “Miss Riley, it’s been quite some time.” Melisa’s voice flowed through the receiver, still as polished and composed as ever. But beneath that calmness was a smug undertone I couldn’t miss. “Philip is considering me as a potential match for Ethan. I wonder if you’ve heard about it.”
My fingers tightened around the phone. My voice had gone cold. “What are you getting at?”
Melisa gave a soft laugh. “Nothing in particular. I simply thought you deserved to know. After all, you and Ethan still have children together. It would be rather unfortunate if you were completely unaware of what was happening behind your back.”
Something inside me snapped. All the restraint I’d been forcing myself to maintain disappeared. “Ethan is free to make his own decisions. I can’t control what he chooses to do. If he wants to marry you, that’s his decision, and I have nothing to say about it.”
I paused. Then my voice dropped, each word carrying a clear warning. “But, Melisa, there’s something you need to understand. If anyone ever tries to hurt my children, I will not overlook it. I can accept losing Ethan. I can accept walking away from him. But I will never tolerate anyone laying a hand on my kids.”
Silence fell between us.
When Melisa finally spoke, there was a probing edge to her voice. “You and Ethan… have you two fallen out?”

I didn’t bother hiding the truth anymore. My response was as cold as ice. “Are you satisfied now that we’re no longer getting along? Isn’t this what you’ve been waiting to hear?”
The line went quiet again.
I didn’t wait around for her answer. I ended the call. My phone landed on the sofa beside me as I closed my eyes. My chest rose and fell rapidly, the emotions I’d been suppressing threatening to spill over.
I knew exactly why Melisa had contacted me.
She wanted to watch me fall apart. She wanted to hear the pain in my voice and see how badly Ethan’s decision had affected me. More than anything, she wanted confirmation that she’d won.
But I refused to give her that satisfaction. I wouldn’t let her see me break.
Still, my determination didn’t make the night any easier. I couldn’t sleep.
Hours passed with me lying awake, staring into the darkness. Outside the window, the night slowly faded. The sky went from deep black to a faint gray, and then gradually brightened until morning washed everything in pale white.
