Chapter 912:
Lianne’s POV:
I softened my voice, hoping my son would understand. “Silas, things between your daddy and me have fallen apart. I just can’t bear living here anymore.”
Silas studied me quietly. His eyes carried the same familiar quality as Ethan’s, yet there was a maturity in them that seemed far beyond his age.
For several moments, he said nothing. Then he reached over and enclosed my fingers in his small hand. “Mom, whatever happens, I’ll stay with you.”

Ruby tilted her head, clearly unable to grasp our conversation. She could only tell that something was wrong with me. She abandoned her spoon, scrambled down from her seat, and hurried into my embrace. Her little arms circled my neck as she pressed herself against me. “Don’t cry, Mommy. I’ll give you a big hug.”
My throat tightened. I lowered my face against her tiny shoulder, blinking rapidly as tears gathered in my eyes.
I wrestled with the question for quite some time before finally voicing it. “If you had to choose… would you two be willing to stay with Daddy?”
Silas immediately stiffened. His fingers tightened around mine as worry flashed across his face. “Mom, are you going to leave us?”
I shook my head at once. “No. Of course I won’t. I’m only worried that living with me might make things harder for you.”
He held on even more firmly. “Mom, I don’t want our family to break apart. Can’t we all just stay together?”
Ruby bobbed her head enthusiastically beside him. “No breaking apart!”
Their innocent insistence tugged painfully at my heart. Then Ruby casually added, “Daddy came to our school yesterday.”
Silas’s face immediately drained of color. He quickly reached over and covered her mouth. “Ruby!”
But it was too late. I had already heard every word. I looked directly at Silas. “Your father went to your school? What did he talk to you about?”
Silas slowly withdrew his hand from Ruby’s mouth. His chin dropped toward his chest, and he stubbornly remained quiet.
Ruby looked at her brother, then back at me. She pursed her lips and refused to speak too.
The two of them had clearly reached an unspoken agreement. Whatever Ethan had told them, neither child intended to reveal it. Seeing them instinctively shield their little world from further disruption made something inside me soften. They were children. They shouldn’t have been forced to carry the burden of their parents’ broken relationship. I couldn’t bring myself to make them choose sides. After a long sigh, I finally relented, “Alright. I won’t go anywhere. We’ll stay here for now.”
Relief immediately spread across their faces.
