Chapter 914:
When we had finally finished, Tracy stood in the center of the living room and looked around. She gave an approving nod. “Not bad. It’s actually quite cozy now. It finally feels like somewhere people live.”
I passed her a glass of water. “I couldn’t have done it without you.”
She accepted the drink, then studied my face for a moment. “Lianne, smile for me.”
I was caught off guard by what she asked, but I forced a smile anyway.
Tracy immediately shook her head. “There isn’t a bit of happiness in your eyes. You might be able to fool other people, but you can’t deceive me.”
My gaze fell. Instead of answering, I turned back toward the boxes and continued sorting through them.
I knew the expression on my face was nothing more than an act. But what did she expect from me? The hurt inside my chest was still fresh. How could I genuinely laugh as though nothing had happened?
Tracy remained quiet for a long while. Eventually, she asked softly, “Lianne, are you still in love with Ethan?”
My hands stopped for the briefest moment. Then I answered honestly, “Yes. I am. I never stopped.”

She seemed ready to respond, but I didn’t give her the opportunity.
“There won’t be anything between Frank and me. I’ve kept my distance from him on purpose because I want him to let go and move forward. Tracy, please don’t try to bring us together anymore.”
She let out a long breath. “I understand that Ethan is still in your heart, but you can’t remain trapped in this forever. You’re young. You can’t possibly spend the rest of your life by yourself.”
I carefully placed the dishes inside the cupboard before replying, “I love him. That’s true. But I’ve also accepted that he’s no longer part of my future. Loving someone and releasing them aren’t contradictory.”
Tracy frowned slightly. “Then do you resent him?”
I fell silent. My emotions became tangled as I searched for the right answer. “I don’t resent him simply because his feelings changed. Love can’t be demanded from someone. If he doesn’t love me anymore, that’s something I have to accept. But I do resent what happened after I gave him everything I had. He allowed Melisa to come between us, and she destroyed the future I had spent so long believing we would have.”
Tracy’s eyes became slightly moist. “Lianne…”
I turned toward her and gave her a small smile. “But I’ve accepted it now. This is how our story ends, and I need to learn to live with that. There is still one thing I can’t completely let go of, though. I really believed Ethan and I would grow old together.”
Tracy approached me and pulled me into a gentle embrace. “You’re always like this. You carry every burden yourself and never let anyone share the weight.”
I lightly patted her back. “It’s okay. I really am alright. I’ve already accepted what happened.”
After a moment, she released me and discreetly wiped beneath her eyes. Then she forced a brighter expression onto her face. “Fine. I won’t say anything else. But if you ever need anything, give me a call. I’ll come over often to check on you and the children.”
I nodded quietly. “Okay.”
