Chapter 916:
Someone who had gone to such lengths to arrange a private meeting with me wasn’t there simply to confess her feelings. Whatever she and the people backing her had planned, they needed time to take action. So I gave her precisely what she needed, alone time with my coffee, so they could poison it.
When I eventually returned, Melisa was sitting exactly where I had left her, looking composed as she wrapped her fingers around her cup.
The instant she noticed me, a strained smile appeared on her face.
I reclaimed my seat and looked down at the coffee waiting before me. Nothing about it seemed suspicious. Its dark surface was undisturbed, and the familiar bitterness of freshly brewed coffee filled the space between us.
I lifted the cup. Before taking a drink, I paused with the rim close to my mouth and glanced sideways at Melisa. She was watching me far too closely. A faint trace of apprehension flickered across her eyes.
I showed no reaction. Instead, I tipped the cup back and calmly finished every drop.
The moment I placed the empty cup on the table, the tension that had been lodged in Melisa’s expression disappeared. Relief washed visibly over her features. Believing the danger had passed, she tried once more. “Ethan, why don’t you give us a chance? I won’t meddle in your personal life, and your children won’t be a problem for me. I only want the opportunity to be with you.”
She was certain of herself now. In her mind, whatever remained between Lianne and me was already dead. She thought she had finally gotten what she wanted.
My eyes dropped briefly to the empty cup before returning to hers. I spoke slowly. “Melisa, what exactly did you put in my coffee?”
The color drained from her face.
Her mouth opened, but only a shaky whisper came out. “You… how did you know?”

I leaned back, studying her with an almost indifferent calm. “Did you honestly believe you could hide it from me? The moment you took that seat, I knew this wasn’t merely some romantic confession.”
Her lips began to tremble. She lowered her gaze, and the composure she had maintained throughout the meeting finally cracked. “I didn’t have a choice… Ethan. My family made me do this. I couldn’t refuse.”
I had no patience for her excuse. I stood, retrieved my jacket from the back of the chair, and prepared to leave.
Melisa hurried after me and caught hold of my arm. “Ethan, please. Just think about it. Your past doesn’t bother me. Neither do your children. I don’t care about any of that. I only want to stay with you…”
I continued toward the exit without acknowledging her.
The moment I stepped outside, the afternoon sunlight hit my eyes so fiercely that I had to narrow them. My car was waiting near the curb. I opened the driver’s door, climbed inside, and brought the engine to life.
Through the rearview mirror, I caught one final glimpse of Melisa standing at the entrance.
She remained there, an expression I couldn’t quite decipher lingering across her features.
