Chapter 924:
When the conversation eventually turned to the fact that the hospital hadn’t discovered what was causing his condition, he dismissed it without much thought. “The medical facilities here aren’t advanced enough. It’s hardly surprising they couldn’t find the problem.”
I accepted his explanation without dwelling on it and simply reminded him, “Don’t push yourself too hard. The children ask about you constantly. Whenever you have the opportunity, spend more time with them.”
He seized on my words immediately. “Can I come see them at your new home?”
I refused without hesitation. “No. That wouldn’t be appropriate. You can bring them to your place if you want to see them. But you can’t come to mine.”
A flicker of disappointment crossed his face.
I kept my tone even. “I don’t want my home filled with reminders of you again. Leaving that life behind took everything I had. I don’t want to find myself trapped in that suffocating atmosphere again.”
He remained quiet for several moments before eventually nodding. “Okay.”

I made sure he understood where we stood now. “And if you get sick again, don’t ask Noah to contact me. We’ve ended our relationship. We need to maintain some distance from each other.”
He lowered his eyes. “I’m sorry.”
I checked the time. Noah would probably arrive soon with Ruby and Silas. I had no desire to pretend that everything between Ethan and me was peaceful just because the children were present, so I decided to leave before they got there.
I picked up my bag and headed for the door.
Just as my hand reached the handle, Ethan’s voice came from behind me. “Lianne, about what happened earlier… I’m sorry.”
I stopped briefly but kept my back toward him. “It’s fine.”
After a short pause, I added casually, “I’m single right now, so it doesn’t really matter. But if I have someone in my life someday, you can’t cross that boundary again.”
I caught the immediate change in his expression from the corner of my eye. His entire face stiffened. Then I opened the door and walked out.
Once I entered the hallway, my pace quickened. My emotions were tangled into something I couldn’t even begin to name.
I only wanted to get out of the hospital as quickly as possible and avoid another encounter with someone I had no desire to face. But after only a few steps, I came face-to-face with Melisa.
She stopped when she saw me. Her eyes moved over me with an unmistakable mixture of curiosity and scrutiny.
A wave of discomfort rolled through me, followed by a sudden twist in my stomach. I didn’t acknowledge her presence. I simply walked past without sparing her a glance.
A few steps later, her voice sounded behind me. “Miss Riley.”
I kept moving.
She called after me again, “You and Ethan…”
I didn’t turn around. I stepped straight into the elevator and let the doors close between us.
