Chapter 927:
Noah stood a short distance behind him. He gave me an apologetic look before subtly shaking his head, silently admitting that he had failed to convince Ethan to stay behind. I was preparing to send Ethan back when Silas grabbed his arm and looked up at me with a radiant smile. “Mom! Dad said he could have dinner with us tonight! I dreamed about him yesterday. In my dream, he took me to the amusement park! I never thought he’d actually come to see us today!”
Ruby quickly followed her brother’s lead. She tugged gently at my clothes, gazing up at me with pleading eyes. “Mommy, please let Daddy stay. I want Daddy to have dinner with us.”
The children’s hopeful expressions made refusal almost impossible.
I wanted to tell them no. The word even reached my lips, but I couldn’t force it out.
I didn’t want Ethan crossing the threshold of my new home, yet sending him away would crush the children after they had become so excited to see him.

I gave him a pointed stare, silently hoping he’d understand and take the initiative to leave.
Instead, he acted as though he hadn’t noticed. He raised a hand to his temple and spoke quietly, his voice sounding so weak. “I’m a little dizzy. Could I come in and sit down for a while?”
There was nothing I could say after that. I stepped aside.
Ethan entered the apartment and slowly surveyed the living room.
He remained quiet, but I noticed his eyes settle on the furnishings for several moments.
I deliberately turned my attention elsewhere. Whatever thoughts were hiding behind that expression were none of my concern.
By the time we sat down to eat, Ruby and Silas had claimed the seats beside Ethan. The two of them talked nonstop, their excitement obvious in every word.
Silas picked up a piece of steak and placed it on Ethan’s plate. Ruby, meanwhile, scooped up some soup with her little spoon and lifted it toward his mouth, insisting that he try it from her bowl.
Ethan lowered his head and indulged them both without complaint. A faint smile curved across his face as he patiently accepted their attention.
The scene should have been comforting. Instead, it felt like something sharp lodged beneath my ribs. I sat opposite them, staring down at my own food while complicated emotions twisted inside me.
Eventually, I spoke softly. “Silas, Ruby, give your dad some space. Let him eat properly.”
Ethan answered before either child could respond, “It’s alright.”
I kept my voice stiff and measured. “Eat your dinner, then go. You’re still recovering, so you need to return to the hospital and rest.”
Rather than argue, he suddenly lifted his hand to his forehead. His eyebrows drew together as his face took on an exhausted expression. “Ah… I suddenly feel a little faint.”
My heart jolted. For a moment, I was afraid he was having another episode. I immediately set down my utensils and reached for my phone, intending to call Noah and have him take Ethan back.
Before I could make the call, Silas stepped directly in front of Ethan. “Mom, Dad doesn’t feel good. Can he stay here and rest? I’ll look after him!”
Ruby wrapped both arms around Ethan’s arm, pressing her cheek against him. “Don’t leave, Daddy. I’ll protect you.”
Seeing the children standing so firmly on his side, I knew I had lost the argument. I lowered my phone and said nothing more.
