Chapter 928:
When dinner ended, I gathered the plates and carried them toward the kitchen. I had barely stepped inside when I heard Ethan behind me. He came over, pushed his sleeves up, and took the dishes from my hands before turning on the faucet.
His movements were smooth and familiar as he began washing everything himself.
I stood nearby, watching him work. His face remained unusually pale, yet his hands moved with the same effortless precision they always had. Something I couldn’t name stirred painfully inside me.
I tried once more to make him leave. “Ethan, you need to go. We’re no longer together, and having you stay here isn’t appropriate. If Melisa hears about this, she’ll get the wrong idea.”
He didn’t bother looking in my direction. “Whether Melisa misunderstands doesn’t matter to me.”
He rinsed the final plate and placed it neatly on the rack. After drying his hands, he turned to face me. “I’m Ruby and Silas’s father. Being present for them is my responsibility. Whatever happened between you and me is separate from them. They deserve to grow up surrounded by love. Do you really want them to watch their parents constantly clash and eventually become strangers?”
My lips parted, but no response came.
His argument was difficult to dismiss. The children shouldn’t have to carry the burden of our failed relationship. They were too young to understand the bitterness, resentment, and complicated history between their parents, and I had never wanted them caught in the middle.
Still, accepting that truth left me feeling frustrated and powerless. No matter how completely our relationship had ended, Ruby and Silas meant our lives would never truly be separate.

Even after washing the dishes, Ethan showed no intention of leaving. “You should head home,” I said once more.
Resting one shoulder against the kitchen entrance, he simply watched me. Then, out of nowhere, he asked, “Have you been dating anyone?”
The question caught me completely off guard.
I frowned. “What did you say?”
“I asked if you’ve been seeing someone,” he explained. There was an unsettling possessiveness in his voice. “Have you?”
I wasn’t about to justify my private life to him. “My relationships are none of your concern. Why are you asking? Don’t tell me you’re still hung up on me.”
His response came immediately, icy and dismissive. “Don’t flatter yourself. I don’t want your actions embarrassing the Thorn Pack. You’re still the mother of my children, and whatever you do reflects on us.”
His words struck deeper than I wanted to admit. Keeping my gaze lowered, I turned to leave, but before I could take another step, his fingers closed around my wrist.
His hand felt cold from the water, the lingering dampness against my skin making his grip impossible to ignore.
“Let me go,” I hissed.
Instead of releasing me, he asked, “Are you seeing Frank?”
A shadow settled over his face while emotions I couldn’t read flickered behind his eyes. Frustration boiled over, dragging days of buried resentment with it.
He had been the one to abandon me. He had chosen Melisa. Yet somehow he was standing here judging me, acting as though I owed him explanations about every man I spoke to.
