Chapter 932:
Watching him struggle for words only intensified the anger inside me. “Ethan, what is it that you actually want from me? You were the one who ended our relationship, yet you keep stepping into my life whenever you please. Do you intend to stay involved with Melisa while expecting me to remain available whenever you decide you want me? What am I to you? Someone you could keep hidden away? Someone you could return to whenever it suits you?”
His expression tightened. “There has never been anything between Melisa and me. Nothing. You can choose whether to trust me, but that’s the truth.”
I held his gaze. “All right. I believe you. Then why are you so determined to convince me? What exactly are you hoping to accomplish?”
I refused to look away. Somewhere beneath all the resentment, another possibility had begun to take shape in my mind. Perhaps there was a reason behind our separation. There was something that Ethan couldn’t bring himself to reveal. I studied his face, waiting. If he could give me any explanation that made sense, even one that sounded like an excuse, perhaps I would be willing to reconsider everything.
But he remained quiet.
Seconds stretched into a long silence. The clock on the wall became the only thing I could hear.
I stared at the eyes that had once made me feel safe and calm. Now they seemed distant and unfathomable.
At last, Ethan spoke. “You and Frank don’t belong together.”
I said nothing. For a long while, I simply looked at him.

Whatever small hope I had been holding onto disappeared.
That was all he had to offer. He wouldn’t tell me why he had ended things. Instead, he kept returning to the same claim that Frank wasn’t suitable for me.
He would rather watch me misunderstand him. He would rather let me resent him. He would rather see me walk away than tell me what was truly happening.
When I finally spoke, my tone was eerily calm. “Ethan, whether Frank is suitable for me isn’t your decision. I’ve known him for years. I understand the kind of man he is better than you ever could. He has never betrayed me, never reduced me to tears, and never made me question my own worth. He respects my choices, encourages me when I need it, and shows up whenever I’m struggling. You insist he’s wrong for me, so tell me this. Who would be right for me? You?”
His eyes shifted with emotions I couldn’t decipher. His lips parted. Nothing came out.
I continued, “Whatever we had is finished. You can refuse to accept that, but it doesn’t change anything. When you decided to end our relationship, you didn’t ask whether I agreed. Now you’re trying to control what happens in my life without considering what I want. Isn’t that incredibly selfish?”
His head lowered. “I know I’m being selfish. But I can’t bear seeing you with him.”
My chest tightened. “Why? Is it because you still care about me?”
He gave me no answer.
His silence told me enough. Whatever hope had remained inside me finally went cold. I pulled my wrist from his grasp and walked toward the bedroom. At the entrance, I stopped. I didn’t turn around. I made myself a promise then. Ethan would never be allowed back into my life.
Not again.
I called Tracy and gently told her that I wouldn’t be joining them.
