Chapter 940:
“There’s nothing for you to do.” Her gesture wasn’t aggressive, but the unmistakable message behind it made my chest feel heavy.
I had no choice but to leave the kitchen. In the dining area, I found Silas bent over his schoolwork. I approached him and lowered myself beside the table. “Silas, what happened to your mom today?”
He lifted his eyes toward me for barely a second before returning his attention to his notebook. “Mom said she hates you.”
Those words hit me harder than expected.
I slowly rose and rested against the wall, my thoughts immediately turning frantic. My first suspicion was that Melisa had once again said something that had upset Lianne, although I couldn’t be certain. Something about Lianne today was deeply unsettling. Sure, Lianne had never been someone who caused a dramatic scene, but I knew her well enough to understand that her indifference could mean far more than an outburst.
And somehow, that frightened me more than anger ever could.

Lost in my thoughts, I didn’t notice her returning until she began setting plates on the table. Then I looked down. Every dish before me was something I particularly enjoyed. She had just said she hated me, yet she had prepared an entire meal filled with my favorite foods.
“Let’s eat.” Lianne took her seat without showing the slightest emotion.
“All right.” I didn’t dare argue. I sat down and picked up a piece of beef.
It was heavily salted.
I tried the fish next.
That was salty too.
She must have been too distracted to notice how much seasoning she had added.
Still, I kept that thought to myself and continued eating without a word.
About halfway through the meal, she pushed a glass of water toward me. Then, with an almost casual tone, she started asking about my job and the children’s performance at school. I answered everything she asked, but my nerves never settled. Every second felt like I was waiting for a storm to break.
Eventually, it did.
Lianne placed her utensils down. “Ethan, I know you don’t usually let women get close. So why are you able to get close to Melisa without a problem?”
My hand tightened around the utensil.
I wanted to answer. I wanted to explain everything. But the truth remained lodged inside me.
This wasn’t the moment. I needed to wait until I could tell her everything properly.
Unexpectedly, she didn’t pursue the matter.
Instead, she leaned against the backrest and met my eyes. “Ethan, I don’t want to end things with you.”
I stared at her. For a moment, I couldn’t process what I had just heard.
She continued before I could respond, “You have two choices. We cut ties for good, and within three months, I’ll find someone else to form a bond with. Once that happens, whatever exists between us will be over permanently. Or we repair our relationship and start again.”
“Lianne, I’ll choose the second option. There’s no question about it.” The answer left my mouth almost immediately.
Then she delivered her next condition.
