Chapter 947:
He gave me no opportunity to protest further.
Eventually, I surrendered to his warmth. Later, we remained nestled together in silence. My cheek rested against his chest while the strong, even thudding beneath my ear gradually calmed me. His body radiated a comforting heat that made me reluctant to move.
One of his arms rested securely around my middle while his free hand moved slowly through my hair. Everything around us felt peaceful, almost dreamlike.
I let my eyelids fall and lingered in that quiet comfort. Then a thought surfaced. “Ethan, there’s something I have to tell you.”

“What is it?”
“Melisa handed me a vial of medicine. She said you asked her to create it specifically for me. According to her, it was supposed to stop the dizziness and hallucinations.”
His entire body stiffened.
The arm around my waist immediately became rigid, and I felt his breath catch.
He lowered his face toward mine. “Did you take it?”
I held his gaze steadily. “Yes.” The tension drained from him almost at once. His shoulders loosened as relief settled over his face.
I sat upright and studied him carefully. “Ethan, I need you to be honest with me. Did you deliberately get involved with Melisa and end our relationship because you wanted her to make that medicine for me?”
For a long while, he said nothing. Eventually, his eyes closed, and he gave a small nod.
Something inside my chest clenched painfully.
I reached up, taking his face between my palms until he had no choice but to look at me. I demanded, “No more hiding things from me. I want the truth.”
His expression became difficult to read, several emotions passing through his eyes at once. When he finally answered, his voice sounded strained. “Melisa was the one who poisoned you. She possesses the antidote, but she refused to hand it over unless I agreed to leave you and become her partner.”
“You actually accepted?”
His words came quietly. “There was no other option. Lianne, we couldn’t afford to wait any longer. I went from one doctor to another, searching for a solution. She was the only person who had what you needed.”
My chest ached as anger mingled with sorrow. “You fool. What if she had actually trapped you with her for good?”
His eyes snapped toward me. “I was never going to make her my partner. There has only ever been you. My feelings for you have never wavered.”
The sincerity in his expression broke through my defenses. My vision blurred, and tears suddenly slipped down my cheeks.
He immediately panicked, reaching for my face. “Don’t cry, honey.”
My voice cracked as I wiped at my tears. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
He drew me close, placing his chin against my hair. His voice was thick with emotion. “I didn’t want you carrying that burden too. I was scared that knowing the truth would put you at even greater risk.”
