Chapter 978:
I seized the opportunity, wrapped my robe securely around myself, and hurried into the bathroom before he could change his mind.
The moment I faced the mirror, I regretted looking. Faint marks covered my neck and collarbone, reminders of exactly how the evening had gone. My face heated all over again.
I turned on the shower and stepped beneath the warm stream. A relieved sigh escaped me as the water eased some of the tension from my aching body.
Peace lasted all of thirty seconds. “Lianne,” Ethan called from outside. “Why don’t we try one more? Just one. I promise I’ll let you sleep afterward.”
I pretended I hadn’t heard him. The shower continued running.
He was persistent. “Then how about three more times before the week is over? One every couple of days. That’s perfectly reasonable, isn’t it?”
That finally pushed me over the edge. I yanked the bathroom door open and leaned halfway out, fixing him with an incredulous stare. “It’s Friday, Ethan. The weekend is practically here. Your calculation doesn’t even make sense.”
He looked entirely unbothered. Reclining against the headboard, he folded his arms behind his head and regarded me with an infuriatingly playful expression. “I only want to keep things interesting between us,” he said. “A little excitement is good for a relationship, isn’t it?”

“Not tonight.” I shut him down immediately. “I’m exhausted. I want to finish my shower and go to sleep. Keep bothering me, and you’ll be spending the night in the guest room.”
One eyebrow rose. He didn’t argue, but the look he gave me said, “We’ll continue this another day.”
I closed the bathroom door and continued washing. When I eventually stepped out, towel wrapped around my hair, the bedroom had been restored to normal. Ethan had already cleaned everything up.
He was sitting against the headboard with his phone in one hand, absorbed in whatever he was reading.
I lowered myself onto the mattress and continued drying my hair. Then a thought suddenly occurred to me.
I turned toward him. “Where did you get all those things? Don’t tell me you actually went shopping for them yourself.”
He set his phone aside and answered casually, “I had Noah arrange it. They were originally meant for Melisa.”
My hands stopped moving. I lowered the towel and studied him. “How did everything go? Did you meet Melisa tonight?”
For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he finally answered, “Yes. I went to see her.” His expression remained composed as he continued, “I used a scented candle to trigger the hallucination. Whatever she experienced while under its influence will feel completely real to her. The only thing left is to alter the medical records and make her believe she’s pregnant. Once that’s done, we’ll achieve what we need.”
I listened quietly, a complicated feeling settling heavily inside me.
So that was where he’d gone. All evening, I’d assumed he had been occupied with some matter at work.
